Gloria Myers' Story
" I am Gloria Norris Myers and I am a Cancer Warrior. I was diagnosed with Stage 3B breast cancer in September 2017 at age 62. Following the death of my husband in a farming accident in 2015, and a badly broken ankle requiring surgery in 2016, I was not prepared for this staggering diagnosis in 2017. However, I am a positive person, with a strong faith in God, and I knew that I would not allow these trials, bad as they were, to take away my joy.
As a Chocolate Tour Committee member, it never occurred to me that I may need the services provided by Penn State Cancer Institute. And yet, here I am! I look at pictures from last year’s Chocolate Tour and think, “this was just weeks before my diagnosis.” Ask anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer and they will tell you it is a life-altering event. Suddenly everything is divided into “before cancer” and “after cancer” – a moment in time that changes everything. But the wonderful thing is, thanks to the men and women at Penn State Cancer Institute, there is hope. Hope for a cure.
My treatment plan included chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. It has been a long, hard road; but on the positive side, I have met some wonderful people along the way. I am thankful to my oncologist, Dr. Leah Cream; my surgeon, Dr. Daleela Dodge, and everyone on each of their respective teams. I am also grateful for Dr. Jennifer Rosenberg and the radiation team. These people have worked together to provide me with the best possible care and I appreciate what they have done.
In addition, I’m positive I would not be where I am today without the love, prayers, and support of my family and many friends. I am blessed by a large support system and it has made all the difference.
Each day is a gift and an opportunity to help others. The money raised by the Chocolate Tour goes toward cancer research – research to find a cure. Your support of the Chocolate Tour will make a difference to someone like me. Help me to find a cure so that one day, no one will suffer with cancer."
